Factors to Consider in Squash Court Lighting

Squash is a racket and ball sport played by two (singles) or four players (doubles squash) in a four-walled court with a small, hollow rubber ball. The players alternate in striking the ball with their racquets onto the playable surfaces of the four walls of the court. The objective of the game is to hit the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. About 20 million people play squash regularly world-wide in over 185 countries. The governing body of Squash, the World Squash Federation (WSF), is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), but the sport is not part of the Olympic Games, despite a number of applications. Supporters continue to lobby for its incorporation in a future Olympic program.

Because of the increasing popularity of squash, it is particularly important to provide excellent lighting for squash courts.

Factors to consider in squash court lighting

Lux Level

One of the factors that you must focus on is the lux level of the LED lighting. According to the World Squash Federation Specifications, 500 lux is needed for non-televised events, the minimum standard lux is at least 300 lux. As for TV standard, it is at least 1200 lux

On average, the standard size of the a single squash court: Length of the court is 9.75m, Width of the court is 6.4m, the total area is 62.4 square meter.

So, in minimum standard, you will 300 x 62.4 = 18,7200 lumens to brighten up the outdoor squash court for recreational or backyard events.

Durability

Next, we need to consider durability. It would be more practical to adopt LED instead of fluorescent inside the court because of the fast-moving balls. The fluorescent tube is more brittle before the replacement of LED lamps.

High CCT & CRI

Color Temperature and CRI are also very important factors to consider.

A general definition of color rendering index is that it is the “measure of the quality of color light.” CRI is intended to be an objective index, measured on a scale from 0 to 100, that compares a light source to the light emitted by natural sunlight. Natural sunlight has a CRI of 100. The most commonly-used LED light sources have CRI’s in a range of 80 to 90. The color rendering index of an LED light source will indicate how closely that source will replicate bright, natural sunlight, and how well that source will illuminate objects to show the true colors to the observer. It is very important in sport lighting

A suitable CCT can provide sunlight-tight configuration so that the player can feel quite nature, this would make the illumination eyes-friendly and camera friendly.

IK rate

Surge protection is a crucial factor in LED lights as a sudden increase in electricity might damage the LED light or cause failure.

Just imagine your LED lighting gets damaged because of a surge. This will not only impact the ongoing match but will damage your reputation as well. So, it is advised to get an LED light that has surge protection.

High IK rate is very necessary since there will be chances that ball might impact the light with heavy speed. An IK10 rated light is very necessary and will offer this shock / impact proof ability quite sound and good.

Anti-glare system

Another factor that you should consider when designing the lighting of the squash court is the anti-glare feature. We all know that strong glare becomes irritating for the players and spectators. This makes them uncomfortable and adversely impacts the vision of the players. It results in the bad performance of the players. High Brightness basically goes with high glare rate, and this is the big enemy for high speed sports. So, another issue that might be the 2nd priority is the Glare Rate.

Flicker-Free

Mostly squash court lighting has low-quality strobe under the cameras. The cameras used in today’s world are high speed. To ensure the lights provide the right illumination for broadcasting, you must invest high-quality lighting. The LED lighting that supports at least 6000 fps video shooting is recommended. The flicker rate should be less than 0.3%. This is because it is not detectable by high-speed cameras.

Tachyonlight’s Squash court lighting system has helped you consider all these factors and are able to help to build up high quality high-end and top-rated squash courts lamps at very reasonable cost.
